Six, seven, or eight people can fit inside the Mazda CX 90, depending on how the cabin is set up. This SUV has a rear bias and is constructed on a brand-new platform. All-wheel drive is standard on every CX 90 for the best possible handling, traction, and towing.
Mazda CX 90 Exterior
The length of the 2024 Mazda CX 90 is 201.6 inches, and its wheelbase is 122.8 inches. It has 7.5 inches more space between the wheels but is only two inches longer than the previous CX-9. The CX 90 is a midsize, three-row crossover SUV that competes with the Hyundai Palisade, Buick Enclave, and Toyota Grand Highlander.
A wide range of people might find the front end design of the CX 90 appealing because of the iconic wide grille found on all Mazda models. What really stands out are the boomerang-shaped indents and LED accent lights, which add both functionality and visual appeal.
The robust and extended chiseled hood of the CX 90 enhances its commanding posture. It exudes strength with its wide wheel arches and high beltline.
Large wraparound lights on the rear emphasize the liftgate’s size. After all is said and done, the CX 90 appears larger and more powerful than the model it replaces.
Mazda CX 90 Interior
Depending on the configuration selected, the CX 90 can accommodate 8, 7, or 6 passengers in seating. Most Turbo models and one PHEV variation have eight seats total; two rows of bench seats are behind the front-row bucket seats.
The second-row captain’s chairs were standard on the seven-seat PHEV model that we tested. This configuration is found in the majority of CX 90 models.
In contrast, the Turbo S has six seats, including a second row with a contoured seat for two people. The third-row seating is generally roomy for kids but can be a little small for adults, depending on how it is arranged.
The choice of materials and level of craftsmanship in the CX 90’s interior is impressive. The seats on the higher models have quilted or real leather coverings. While the seats on the base model have imitation leather. The chic suede piping on the inlays complements the stylish metallic trim on the front cupholders.
Safety and Technology
For a car in this class, the CX 90 comes with a full complement of standard and optional driver-assist features. These consist of turn-across-path braking, blind spot monitoring and assistance, rear cross-traffic alert, smart brake support (automated emergency braking), and lane keep assist with road departure prevention.
Additional features include front and rear parking sensors, driver attention alert, secondary collision reduction system, traffic sign recognition, emergency lane keeping, Mazda radar cruise control with stop & go and automatic speed limit adjustment, cruising and traffic support, and a dynamic line rearview camera.
Clear visuals are provided by the 12.3-inch instrument display and the 10.25-inch center display screen, which are standard on the CX 90. It is important to remember that the center display lacks touchscreen functionality and controlled by the control knob.
There is a 12-speaker Bose system available as an upgrade from the vehicle’s standard 8-speaker audio system. Multiple USB ports, HD Radio, and smartphone connectivity are additional standard features. In our test model, there was an installed optional wireless charging pad located at the base of the center console.
Performance
The standard model is the first Mazda to offer this many cylinders in ten years. With a 3.3-liter inline turbocharged six-cylinder engine. This one produces 332 pound-feet of torque and 280 horsepower.
The high-output Turbo S version of the inline-six delivers 340 horsepower when using premium gasoline, while ordinary fuel generates 319 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. For maximum efficiency, both turbos are coupled to a 48-volt mild hybrid system.
There is also a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) available with a 100-KW electric motor. In regular mode, a fully charged PHEV can cover 26 miles on electricity alone.
When the gas engine and electric motor work concurrently, this model may produce up to 323 horsepower and 340 pound-feet of torque. All CX-90s use an 8-speed automatic transmission to transfer power to the wheels.
With combined city/highway/combined mpg of up to 24/28/25 mpg, the CX 90 is remarkably efficient for its class. The PHEV’s gas engine likewise achieves a combined fuel economy of 25 mpg, but when the electric motor runs exclusively, it becomes even more efficient.
